Zen Home

Your home should be your refuge from the rest of the world. You should feel a sense of calm come over you once you arrive home from a hard day. Designing your home based on Zen principles can give you more relaxed and peaceful state of mind. What is Zen?
Zen is that state of mind that heightens our awareness to the here and now without relying fully on our opinions and ideas. The natural balance and effortless ease of nature is mimicked in the Zen style.

Zen interior decorating uses the harmonious interaction of space and form within your home. This gives you a more soothing and relaxed feel, giving you the great amount of rest which you deserve. The Zen approach to interior decorating promotes minimalism. Zen uses the bare essentials within a dwelling and each item in the house has a specific use.

To make your home more Zen, try these tips:

  • Organize. A messy, unorganized home can prevent you from relaxing. A disorganized home can stress you out. Take away the clutter and make sure there is a place or a “home” for everything.
  • Use neutrals, water and earth tones to decorate and allow for more natural light to come through with large windows.
  • Bring natural elements into your home. Add some plants and some wooden furniture. Accent or decorate with simple, natural items (flowers, bowl of stones, a picture frame). Use plain patterns or solid colours.
  • Each room should have its own special purpose and design. Keep only the essentials in that room.

Benefits of a Zen Home:

  1. Less stressful. Clutter is a form of visual distraction, and everything in our vision pulls at our attention at least a little. The less clutter, the less visual stress we have. A minimalist home is calming.
  2. More appealing. Think about photos of homes that are cluttered, and photos of minimalist homes. The ones with almost nothing in them except some beautiful furniture, some nice artwork, and a very few pretty decorations, are the ones that appeal to most of us. You can make your home more appealing by making it more minimalist.
  3. Easier to clean. It’s hard to clean a whole bunch of objects, or to sweep or vacuum around a bunch of furniture. The more stuff you have, the more you have to keep clean, and the more complicated it is to clean around the stuff. Think about how easy it is to clean an empty room compared to one with 50 objects in it.

Uncluttered, simple, peaceful and serene, a Zen home can be a haven in a busy world. By letting the principles of Zen on light, space and function interact harmoniously within your home, you could have a happy home that is in-sync with nature and the world around you.
